Authorities said they have launched a hazardous materials probe at a Winnetka intersection after an unmarked canister fell from a vehicle and started leaking an unknown yellow fluid.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said police received the initial call about the canister at 11:29 a.m.

The canister apparently fell from a vehicle at the northwest corner of Winnetka Avenue and Vanowen Street, according to a Los Angeles Fire Department statement.

The Fire Department will investigate the incident according to protocol, officials said in a news alert.

Lanes or roadways will remain closed until operations are complete, officials said. Motorists should avoid the area, if possible, and can expect congestion and delays.

Bus riders were urged to follow @MetroLAAlerts for any changes to local service.
