With the forthcoming “La La Land” looking to be an Oscar contender, it’s a fine coincidence that some interesting musicals, both celebrated and little known, are making an appearance.
The celebrated film is the Fred Astaire/Cyd Charisse “Silk Stockings,” a musical version of Greta Garbo’s comic “Ninotchka” and coming out on Blu-Ray from the Warner Archive Collection.
On a larger scale, and put out by Film Chest Media Group, is a five DVD compilation called “The Golden Age of Musicals.” It features 17 films from 1937 to 1957, including such little known items as “The Duke Is Tops” and “Something To Sing About” as well as more familiar fare like “Royal Wedding.” – Kenneth Turan
