I love color movies, I really do, but it is a special treat to see new Criterion Collection releases of some of my favorite films from the golden age of black and white.
On the lighter side is Howard Hawks “His Girl Friday,” a screwball comedy talkfest starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell as ex-spouses who are also editor and reporter. Extra bonus is a long lost version of the film’s predecessor, Lewis Milestone’s “The Front Page.”
Considerably darker is John Huston’s “The Asphalt Jungle,” a peerless caper movie that set the standard for all that followed it and also offered Marilyn Monroe a key early role. – Kenneth Turan
