A bicyclist was struck and killed by an SUV in Long Beach on Monday, and the motorist abandoned the vehicle and was being sought, authorities said.
A witness called police at 1:20 a.m. to report a car hit a pedestrian at Long Beach Boulevard and Bort Street, Long Beach Police Lt. John Kanaley said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Kanaley said. Authorities withheld the name of the dead man, who was in his 50s, pending notification of his relatives.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 2000 Ford Expedition struck and injured two bicyclists, one of whom jumped onto the hood of the vehicle in an apparent attempt to keep the driver from leaving, and was fatally injured when he was thrown from the vehicle some distance away, police said.
The motorist then abandoned the SUV, which was found in the general area, and fled on foot.
The surviving bicyclist was treated at the scene and released. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Long Beach police.
