The remains of a woman’s body discovered in Santa Clarita earlier this month have been identified as those of a missing Tarzana woman last seen shopping at a Goodwill in Reseda with her sister in January.

The body was identified Tuesday by coroner’s officials as Maricela Garcia, 26, of Tarzana said Investigator Rudy Molano of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The cause of death has been deferred, and it could take between six to nine months to determine whether her death was an accident, a suicide, a homicide or from natural causes, he said.

The remains were discovered by a local citizen walking his dog on March 7 in the area of Golden Valley Road, west of Robert C. Lee Parkway, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials have said.

The Los Angeles Police Department was investigating the case of the missing woman, which prompted significant media attention and community support.

A family member could not immediately be reached on Wednesday.
